Now that the days are growing longer, we’ve started sowing seeds in the polytunnel - an exciting time, filled with anticipation as we watch for those first signs of life. It’s a delicate process: keeping the plants warm, ensuring they’re not overwatered and maybe even having a little chat with them for good measure! At Pitfield Barn, we’re passionate about growing seasonal, chemical-free British cut flowers that reflect the beauty of each season whilst also looking after the birds and wildlife that share our fields. Whether you’re looking for fresh flowers for your home, your wedding or other special event, PYO, dried or a florist order, we offer varieties which have natural beauty and scent. We offer fresh flowers throughout the week from when our season starts, available to order via email or phone, and always have flowers for sale when our Stable Kitchen is open to the public.
We also host a number of workshops, showcasing the incredible talent and creativity from our local community. It’s inspiring to share our space with such amazing people who offer wonderful opportunities to learn something new, have fun and enjoy with others.
Our Stable Kitchen will re-open April for the year. It’s not a restaurant, but a cozy spot to enjoy homemade cakes, coffee and drinks while experiencing life on a working flower farm. Come and see what we’re growing, connect with nature, and get a glimpse into the highs and lows of flower farming. Everything we do is aimed at supporting local, fostering creativity and helping people reconnect with the seasons.

We’ve been a little quiet of late. As the garden sleeps, we’ve also been taking some time to pause and rest after a pretty tough 2024. Behind the scenes we’ve been planning and getting ready for the new season ahead.
NEW this year we are holding a series of practical, hands-on gardening workshops which will run over 4 separate days throughout the key months of the growing season and will cover essential gardening tasks from propagation, plant care and pruning to soil management and successional planting. These classes will be led by expert horticulturist/florist Bea Andrews of @botanika_floral. Many of you will already know of her and she brings a wealth of 30 years experience in all things horticultural and has worked for some of the finest plant specialists in the country.
Starting with:
WINTER at Pitfield Barn. Rose pruning: Learn about the principles of rose pruning, how to care for different types of roses and gain confidence in maintaining a variety of flowering shrubs in your own garden. We have a selection of roses here from different groups, hydrangeas and other deciduous shrubs so you will have a chance to put your new skills into practice, have a go at pruning and ask questions along the way. These practical workshops will be kept to a small group (6) to ensure everyone is getting the most out of them.
Date: Friday, 28 February - 10am-1pm. Hot drinks and cake included! £75

Join us for a cosy afternoon where you’ll be able to create your own eco-friendly, sustainable and fully compostable Christmas wreath. The lovely Bea of @botanika_floral will guide you through the steps. Starting off with a willow frame, you’ll be able to moss and choose from a lovely selection of fresh, seasonal foliages, cones, berries etc to decorate your wreath with. It’s always wonderful to see everyone’s at the end, each is unique and reflects your own personal style and taste. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

We’ve often been asked why the name Pitfield Bar

We’ve often been asked why the name Pitfield Barn? Peter, my colleague, built the barn about 12 years ago using reclaimed, up-cycled and recycled materials wherever possible. We try and follow this through in all parts of the business, working as sustainably as possibly.
When fields were given names years ago, the field here was called Pit Field. There was a saw-pit on site, a pit where timber was positioned to be sawed with a long two-handled saw by two people, one standing above the timber and the other below in the pit dug out in the ground. It was used for producing saw planks from tree trunks which could then be cut down into boards, posts etc so we thought Pitfield Barn was an obvious name choice.
Over the (nearly) 4 years we’ve been growing here, we’ve slowly been able to change parts of the barn to create more useful working spaces. We started by creating a studio in the larger part of the barn where local creatives and artists are able to come and hold workshops. Last year we created a kitchen in one of the stables and earlier this year, we knocked through into the middle stable to create a better flow and a little more indoor space for the stable kitchen and cafe which we opened three days a week, May 23. As well as growing a variety of seasonal British flowers for weddings, events, florists, subscriptions and local deliveries, we also deliver flowers weekly to @thesussexpeasant for their mobile farm trucks. Their flowers are made into farm bunches and wrapped ready for you to take home from their markets to enjoy or perhaps buy as a gift for someone. The Stable kitchen and cafe was open today and it was lovely seeing people with their friends and family sitting outside enjoying the May sunshine. We’re open tomorrow 8-3.30pm and Saturday 9-3.30pm so do come and say hello. Nigella, it’s amazing how such a pretty little thing can come from a tiny seed. The flowers appear to float above their long stems.
My first week back after a 2 1/2 week break from the field after a knee op. Monday, it felt a little overwhelming, wasn’t quite sure where to start as the things you don’t want to grow seem to have been on steroids and are romping away and the things you want to grow are going at their own speed and taking their time or being eaten! The slugs are normally well-behaved here as we have lots of wildlife but this year, they seem to be having a farm to feast experience! We’ve lost a lot more than normally sadly. It’s always a busy time of year and I feel a bit behind at the moment but hopefully will catch up soon.
